We've delved into the history of flowers and their various meanings across the globe, but we haven't yet discussed the history of floristry and floral arrangements. Why do we bring flowers inside and what place do they have in restaurants, clothing shops, spas, etc.?
While the earliest examples of flower arrangements date back to the Egyptians in 2,500 BCE, it wasn't until the early nineteenth century that Harriet Lane, niece of President James Buchanan, brought flowers to the White House. Fun fact, she also acted as his First Lady or "Hostess", as he was the only president who was unmarried. Before her, Americans were more likely to keep wax flowers in the home and to keep real flowers outside. She created a conservatory on the west side of the White House and had her pick of fresh blooms to create arrangements throughout the house.
There is a significant importance to floral design in retail and hospitality. Thinking back on some of the best restaurant and retail experiences I've had, they have all had stunning floral arrangements. It was several factors that did it for me: the fragrance, the feeling of being welcomed, the visual element they add to the space.
You may know that we make bouquets for weddings, special events, just because, etc. You may not realize however that many of the shops in Kingston are adorned with weekly arrangements made by us! Leigh Kelly Skin Studio
